Garage door track repair keeps the rollers riding true. Rails can bend when a car taps the door, and brackets loosen over the years. Rollers wear flat or rust and start to bind. Island Fox makes a derailed door safe, trues or replaces the rails, tightens every bracket and swaps worn rollers.
Signs You Need Garage Door Track Repair
- A roller has popped out, and that corner of the door hangs loose.
- The door stops, jerks or scrapes at the same spot every time.
- One rail has a kink or a flat spot where something hit it.
- There is a gap between the door edge and the rail on one side only.
- Bracket bolts are loose, or the rail moves when you push on it.
- Rollers squeal, wobble or have wheels worn into flat spots.
Why Doors Leave Their Rails
| Cause | What we do |
|---|---|
| Car or bin hits the bottom | Straighten or replace the rail |
| Rollers worn or seized | Fit a new roller set |
| Brackets working loose | Re-fasten and re-plumb |
| Cable snapped on one side | Renew cables, then re-align |
How We Repair Garage Door Tracks
- Make the door stable. The opener is unplugged, and the door is clamped or propped so it cannot drop while the rail is open.
- Find what pushed it out. We look for a bent rail, loose brackets, worn rollers or a slack cable, since the cause decides the fix.
- True or renew the rail. A mild bend can be worked straight. A kinked or rusted rail piece is replaced with one of the same size.
- Set the alignment. We check that both rails are plumb, parallel and the right distance from the door, then tighten every bracket.
- Fit rollers and test. Rollers are swapped as a set so the door runs evenly, and the door is cycled until it travels smoothly from floor to stop.
Track and Roller Options
Standard lift. The rail rises a short way and curves back under the ceiling. Most homes here use it.
High lift and low headroom. A high-lift rail climbs farther up the wall before it turns, which frees ceiling space. A low-headroom setup does the opposite for garages with little room above the door. Each needs its own rail parts.
Rail thickness. Heavier doors, such as wood or thick insulated steel, need a sturdier rail and stronger brackets. A thin rail under a heavy door bends sooner.
Roller types. Plain steel rollers are the basic option. Steel or nylon rollers with ball bearings roll smoother and last longer, and sealed nylon wheels are the quietest.
Safety First With a Derailed Door
When a door is partly out of its rail, gravity is doing most of the work. Do not push it back by hand, do not loosen bracket bolts, and do not press the remote to see what happens. Keep everyone out from under it and leave the car where it is if the door is above it. The bottom brackets and cables carry spring force, so they stay untouched until the tension is safely off.
Fix the Rail or Replace More?
Most track calls end with a straightened or new rail piece, tight brackets and a fresh roller set. A full new track set makes sense when both rails are rusted thin or the wrong size for the door. If a car hit the door hard, look past the rails: a bent bottom section may need a section swap, and a broken cable means cable work as well. When several sections are damaged, compare the repair with a new door.

What sets the final figure: rail and derailed-door work starts from $150 per door, and a new roller set from $120 per set. The total depends on whether a rail can be trued or must be replaced, whether one side or both are bent, and whether the door uses high-lift parts. A snapped cable adds from $150 per cable, and a bent section is quoted on site. You approve each line first.
Track Questions We Hear
Can I knock the rail straight with a hammer?
It is not a safe fix. The door may shift or fall, because the rail is what holds it up when it is open. A hammered rail also tends to stay out of line, so the rollers keep binding. Leave it and call us. A track fix is from $150 per door, and we check both cables at the same time through cable repair.
Why does the door rumble as it moves?
Worn rollers and loose rail bolts are common causes. Dry hinges and a flat spot on a roller wheel add to the noise. We find which one it is and fix it, often by fitting a new roller set from $120 per set. If the rumble comes from the motor instead, our opener repair page explains what we check there.
How much is a track repair?
From $150 per door for rail and derailed-door work, and from $120 per set for rollers. The figure grows only if other parts failed too, such as a cable or a bent section, and you hear the full amount first. The check-up visit is $0 if you approve the repair, and our garage door repair page lists what else we inspect.
Should I use the door if a roller popped out?
No. A roller out of its rail means part of the door is no longer supported. Running the opener can pull the door farther out or bend a section. Unplug the opener, keep the car out of the way and call our live line. If the door is stuck open overnight, ask for emergency garage door repair.
Do nylon rollers make a difference?
Nylon rollers with sealed bearings run quieter than plain steel rollers, and the wheel itself cannot rust, which helps near the beach. Steel rollers with bearings are tough and suit heavy doors. Either way, we fit a full set so every hinge carries the same load. If the noise comes from the springs instead, see spring repair.
