Garage Door Repair FAQ

Clear answers to the questions South County homeowners ask most.

Fixed price before we begin · Live phone 24/7

This garage door repair FAQ gathers what callers ask us most, grouped by topic: springs and cables, openers, rates, emergencies and new doors. Follow the link inside any answer to read the full service page. If your question is not here, phone us any hour, and a person picks up.

Spring and Cable Questions

A spring just snapped. What should I do?

Leave the door closed and keep clear. Do not use the opener, because it will strain to lift a door the spring no longer holds. Do not try to loosen or wind the spring yourself either. Book spring repair, and we size the new springs to your door and replace both if it has two.

What does a new spring cost?

Island Fox starts each spring at $150, and your full figure is fixed before work. Doors with two springs usually get both at once, since they wear out side by side. The spring repair page explains how we measure the door, and any worn cable or roller is priced on its own line.

Why does my door land crooked?

A lift cable or drum is usually at fault. Park the door where it is and read about cable repair. Running it again can twist the sections in the rails. Cables are renewed in pairs, from $150 per cable, so both corners lift at the same rate and the door sits level.

Opener Questions

Why does the door reverse on its own?

Dirty or misaligned photo eyes are the usual cause. Wipe both lenses and check that the small light on each eye glows steady. A worn gear or a force setting that is off can cause it too. If cleaning does not help, see opener repair, which is quoted once we know the make and model.

Should I repair my opener or buy a new one?

A newer opener with one failed part, such as a sensor or a gear, is usually worth fixing. A very old unit with no photo eyes, a loud chain and a failing circuit board is often better replaced. Our opener installation page explains belt, chain and direct-drive models so you can compare.

Rates and Visits

Does the check-up visit cost anything?

It is $0 when you approve the repair. During the visit we look over the springs, cables, rollers, rails and opener, explain what failed and give you a fixed figure before any work starts. The garage door repair page lists the parts we check, and the rate sheet shows every starting price.

Do I get a price before you start?

Yes. Every job starts with a figure you agree to first. Springs start from $150 per spring, cables from $150 per cable, rollers from $120 per set and track work from $150 per door. Opener repair and section swaps are quoted on site, because the price depends on the model in front of us.

Emergencies and Hours

Do you answer at night?

Yes, 24/7. The after-hours page covers what to do while you wait. When you call, say whether the door is open or shut, whether a car is inside and what you heard. That helps us plan the visit and tell you how to keep the door still until then.

My door is stuck open. Can I close it by hand?

Only if both springs and both cables are whole. If one is broken, do not pull the red release cord while the door is up, because the door can come down hard and fast. Keep people and pets out from under it, leave the car where it is and call. Emergency garage door repair covers how we secure it.

New Doors and Sections

Do you service carriage-style doors?

Yes. Carriage-look doors ride on the same springs, cables, rails and openers as any sectional door, so we repair them the same way. If the decorative handles or straps are loose, mention it and we can tighten them during the visit. See door repair for the full list of parts we fix.

Can a single section be replaced?

Often, if the maker still builds it. We read the label inside the door and measure the section to confirm the size, design and color before quoting. A new section may look brighter than a sun-faded door at first. See panel replacement for how the swap works and when it is not possible.

When is a new door the better choice?

When several sections are cracked or rusted, the door is badly bent, or parts for your model are no longer made, a new door usually beats patching. You choose the size, material, insulation and style, and the price is set once those are picked. New garage door installation explains the options in plain terms.
